EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This Note is not part of the Order.)

Under section 218(1) of the Local Government Act 1972, for each county in England and Wales and for Greater London, lord-lieutenants are required to be, and lieutenants may be, appointed. Under section 218(4) the existing lieutenants (heretofore generally known as lord lieutenants) may be assigned to the new counties created by the Act and to Greater London as lord-lieutenants or lieutenants. This Order effects the appropriate assignment. New appointments will be made in counties not covered by the Order.
